Shelton Earns Endorsement from Texans for Lawsuit Reform

November 28, 2007

Fort Worth, Texas – Republican Mark Shelton today gained the support of Texans for Lawsuit Reform (TLR) in his bid to become District 97 State Representative.

“As a physician, I care deeply about tort reform,” Shelton stated. “I am thrilled to have the support of Texans for Lawsuit Reform, which has been a leader on this issue in Texas and a trailblazer for tort reform organizations nationwide.”

Shelton experiences firsthand the need for tort reform as a pediatrician at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. Once, Shelton was sued by a patient who he never even treated.

“The voters of Tarrant County have a clear choice. Dr. Shelton will bring fresh ideas, independence, and a critical medical perspective to the State Legislature,” Justin Unruh, TLR PAC Director, said.

In 2003, the Texas Legislature passed many much-needed tort reforms including capping medical malpractice non-economic jury awards at $250,000 and creating stricter requirements for expert testimony. These reforms have resulted in more doctors who are willing to work in Texas and in making health care more available and affordable.

“Before the 2003 reforms, frivolous lawsuits were driving Texas doctors out of the state and causing health care costs to skyrocket. If elected, I will work to protect the 2003 reforms and make sure all Texas businesses are protected from unwarranted legal action,” Shelton said.

The Runoff Election for District 97 State Representative will be held on Tuesday, December 18, and Early Voting will be December 10 through December 14.
