Perry Sets Special Election for Dist. 97 Seat

August 17, 2007 | The Associated Press

Gov. Rick Perry on Friday set Nov. 6 as the special election for Texas House District 97, vacated after Fort Worth Republican Rep. Ann Mowery resigned.

Whoever wins the seat will serve out the remainder of the term, which expires in January 2009. Candidates have until Aug. 31 to file their application with the secretary of state. Early voting begins Oct. 22.

The 76-year-old announced her resignation last week.

Mowery said in a written statement dated Aug. 7 she would resign at the end of this month to travel and spend time with her grandchildren.

She announced in May at the end of this year’s legislative session that she would not run for an 11th term. She’s represented southwestern Fort Worth, Benbrook and southwestern Tarrant County for 19 years.

A staunch supporter of property rights and an opponent of abortion, she became known in recent years in part for her unflinching support of Republican House Speaker Tom Craddick.
